Reading is a relaxing and mentally stimulating activity but, unfortunately, it can be hard to find the time to sit down and pick up a book. Indeed, daily life has a habit of getting in the way, especially when it comes to looking after families and going to work, so reading has become something of a neglected pastime. This is where audio books come into their own. Providing a portable medium through which a story can be told, audio books can be played on cd players, mp3 players, computers, laptops and even on dvd players. The advantage of this over conventional paper books is that, in theory at least, an audio book can be enjoyed anywhere at any place and any time.
Indeed, the drive to work can prove the perfect opportunity to listen to an audio book, whilst it can also be enjoyed at the gym or in the bath, for instance. A listener can also enjoy an audio book during the night, whilst in bed, which has the added benefit of not disturbing anyone else in the room! Moreover, the child audio book is an excellent tool for increasing a child`s imagination and thirst for reading, which they may otherwise have neglected with only standard paper books at their disposal. In other words, child audio books make `reading` fun for kids.
Among the top ten children`s audio books of all time would be Rudyard Kipling`s `Just So Stories`, which is narrated by Johnny Morris and comprises 65 minutes of pure Kipling imagination, answering questions such as `How did the leopard get his spots?` and `How did the camel get his hump?`. Another top child audio book is `50 Favourite Nursery Rhymes` by BBC Audiobooks Ltd. This immensely popular audio book helps children to sleep with nursery rhymes that have been told for generations, from Baa Baa Black Sheep to Polly Put the Kettle On!
Also by BBC Audiobooks, Lewis Carroll`s enchanting `Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass`, which total 2 hours and 20 minutes, take older children through a magical journey full of strange and curious happenings. Also of a traditional theme, `A Bear Called Paddington` by Michael Bond and narrated by none other than Stephen Fry comprises 2 hours and 40 minutes of Paddington Bear`s very first adventures.
Roald Dahl`s `Charlie and the Chocolate Factory`, `Matilda`, `The Witches` and `James and the Giant Peach` also deserve their place among the very best child audio books of all time, whilst the more contemporary `Fairy Gold` by Gwyneth Rees is especially popular among girls aged between three and seven. Finally, there are also many Thomas & Friends audio books to enjoy, any one of which would be worthy of a top ten berth. Indeed, Rev. W. Awdrey`s enjoyable tales of everyone`s favourite train make for excellent bedtime stories.
If your child will listen to the child audio book on their own at night, some Thomas bedding, for example, would be especially useful in encouraging their young minds to wander |
